I’ve been working in several modes of energy therapy and body work since 1986, beginning with traditional Japanese Amma Massage in San Francisco at the Amma Institute under the renowned massage teacher, David Palmer. This type of bodywork is based on the principles of Chinese medicine and is more than 5,000 years old. The Amma techniques involve pressing, stroking, stretching and percussive manipulations with the thumbs, fingers, arms, elbows, knees, and feet on acupressure points along the body’s 14 major meridians. Through the structure of Kata (choreographed movement), Amma utilizes rhythm, pacing, precision, and form in massage. Shiatsu was developed from the Amma tradition. From the viewpoint of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), amma massage assesses flow and harmony of the five essential substances: qi (energy), jing (essence), shen (spirit), xue (blood), and jin-ye (body fluids).
